New gear highlights: May 17, 2019

We’ve found ourselves surrounded by new urban and touring kit over the past week or so. Nothing else for it but to get the camera out to show off some of the highlights…

In 1988 Arai’s SZ open-face helmet was born (incidentally, the same year Arai invented toolless visor removal) and this SZ-R VAS is the ninth and newest form.

The SZ-R VAS takes some features from their premium sports helmet – the RX-7V – such as its top ventilation and Variable Axis System (VAS) visor, which lowers the mounting position to create a rounder, smoother shell shape.

But geared towards touring, the SZ-R also has a long Pinlock-ready visor (although the insert itself is sold separately and will be available soon) and deep speaker pockets for easy installation of intercom systems. A Pro Shade external sun shade can also be fitted to the visor to reduce glare.

The new Arai lid has launched at £529.99 for plain colours and £629.99 for graphics. They come in sizes XS-XL.

Richa Ghent GTX mixed gloves

Belgian brand Richa’s latest Gore-Tex gloves are ideal for cooler conditions.

The Ghent gloves have a mixed leather and textile construction, and use a Primaloft thermal lining and a Gore-Tex membrane. A rubber blade on the left index finger clears your visor of rainwater, while D3O knuckle armour keeps you protected.

The gloves have launched at £119.99 in black, in sizes S-3XL.

Richa Galvestone textile jacket

If the wax cotton look appeals to you but the extra weight and slippery texture of actual waxed cotton doesn’t then Richa’s new jacket could be exactly what you’re looking for.

The new Galvestone’s outer is made from soft-feel polyester and nylon, with a fixed waterproof membrane and a removable thermal liner. It comes with Level 1 D3O elbow and shoulder armour, as well as a back protector. The jacket is also certified to the basic ‘A’ level of the new CE safety standard.

Fit can be adjusted using the heritage-style waist belt and popper buttons on the wrist, while a short connection zip lets you connect Richa trousers.

The Galvestone has launched in black or green, in sizes S-5XL at £229.99.

Spirit Motors Softshell Jacket With Protectors 1.0

A riding jacket that doesn’t look like a conventional bike jacket has many benefits.

Embedded within the new collection from German brand Spirit Motors is the straightforwardly named Softshell Jacket With Protectors 1.0 (you certainly can’t accuse them of false advertising).

The waterproof jacket is reinforced with Cordura on the elbows and shoulders, which are backed by CE-approved armour. Ventilation zips increase airflow through to the rider, while reflective piping keeps you visible at night.

The jacket has launched in black at £179.99. It comes in sizes S-2XL.

Merlin Pioneer urban boots

You might not rely on an urban boot for long-distance adventures, but they’re very convenient for short commutes or if you need to wear them all day.

Merlin have released their new Pioneer boots in three colours – green, black or grey, at £139.99. They’re made from cowhide suede that’s backed by a Hipora waterproof lining and reinforced heel, ankle, toe and sole for protection against crushing.

Reflective piping on the sides of the boots and on the heel pull-loop aid visibility. The Pioneer boots are available in sizes 7-12.
